Reliable material handling technology in non-blast furnace iron-making process

The demand for non-blast furnace iron-making technology has grown dramatically in recent decades, including both the ore reduction and equipment design process. Many non-blast furnace iron-making systems have shown successful iron-making capability; however, these systems have been running under inefficient conditions and at high maintenance costs. As a result, they often cannot compete with blast furnace systems and have been forced out of the market in many cases, despite the fact that they have the advantage of not having to use coking coal in the ore reduction process. One of the key problems with non-blast furnace iron-making processes, such as HIsmelt, has been that insufficient attention has been paid to the importance of bulk solids handling technology. This includes, for example: · Lack of understanding of ore flow properties at high temperature (~800℃)· Lack of appreciation of how to prevent uncontrolled flow (flooding) of fines· Insufficient attention paid to the importance of particle segregation· Use of funnel flow designs instead of first-in-first-out mass flow designs.Three likely results of using funnel flow are: material caking, dead material, and different levels of ore reduction due to residence time differences in the equipment Bulk solids handling technology can be applied not only to the design of reactor vessels and process equipment but also to the design of feeders, distributors, screw dischargers, deadmans, pneumatic conveyors. This paper focuses on how to measure flow properties at high temperature and how to design such equipment after obtaining the flow properties. It is expected that, once applied to the material handling technology in non-blast furnace iron-making processes, these systems can be designed reliably to eliminate--or modified to significantly reduce--the above-mentioned problems.
