Understanding of Monthly order(Wollyeong) and Agriculture in the Early Days of Joseon Dynasty
<Abstract>In this study, I want to show how to establish and operate the status of monarch based on providence and the thought of disaster and abnormality and operating system of country focused on agriculture administration in the early days of Joseon.Monthly order covered the ritual for good harvest, the spirit focused on the seasonal weather of heavenly time and agriculture and sericulture, the daily life of monarch according to the change of season, and the interpretation and countermeasure against disaster and abnormality.In the dynastic society, monthly order showed the political administration focused on monarch and political theory of confucianism to follow heaven and adapt weather in the interpretation and countermeasure against disaster and abnormality.Joseon claimed that new dynasty was established accepting providence and making political theory of confucianism as ideological base.In this premise, I searched the status of monarch and the nature of operating country focused on monthly order.Joseon dynasty accepted monthly order which was reflected the thought of disaster and abnormality of responding theory between heaven and man.It was used to interpret disaster and abnormality as drought, to arrange courtesy system as ancestral rites, to operate bureaucratic administration, penal administration and agricultural administration, and to collect seasonal medical plant.They published ”Regulations of Monthly Order(Wollyeongsamok)” ”Hanging Picture of Monthly Order(Wollyeongdo)”, and ”Monthly Order for Collecting Korean Medical Plant(Hyangyakchachuiwollyeong)”.Monthly order reflected agricultural season and useful for establishing and operating policy to encourage agriculture.Joseon dynasty helped to concentrate labor on agriculture and sericulture with it.They emphasized the agricultural policy to plow and weed much and encourage and devote oneself to farming following seasonal time.They pushed ahead with effort to publish and circulate ”Direct Explanation of Farming(Nongsajikseol)” and to develop new kinds of grain.Though Joseon dynasty accepted monthly order system to administrative country by monthly, they took effort to reinterpret it according to the seasonal weather and the reality of Joseon.It was conception for monthly order of Joseon.Also, it was useful for ideal politics of Joseon to establish the status of rational and moral monarch and the base for stabilization of dynasty.
