A General Primary Side Constant Current Control Method

  The primary side constant current (CC) control method is widely adopted for LED driver and portable device charger applications due to its simplicity and low cost.However,most of the primary side CC control method now is only suitable for discontinuous current mode (DCM) mode or critical conduction mode (CRM).This paper proposes a general primary side control method suitable for both continuous current mode (CCM),CRM and DCM,which can be adopted for most of the topologies like Buck,Boost and Buck-Boost (or Flyback).The output current is calculated by the average of primary side switch current,primary side switch on time,and secondary side diode on time with a very simple analog circuit.The detailed operation principles and implementation circuits for a Flyback converter are presented as an example.Experimental results from a 5V/2A prototype verify the theoretical analysis.
