2 μm continuous wave and passively Q-switched fiber laser in thulium-doped germanate glass fibers

As we know, germanate glass fibers are promising medium to obtain 2 μm laser outputs, while all 2μm pulsed laser outputs generated from germanate glass fibers are active Q-switched which requires additional switching electronics, a passively Q-switched way may be more attractive. We demonstrate a 2 μm continuous wave and passively Q-switched laser output using a home-made Tm3+ doped germanate glass fiber. In the continuous wave regime, a output power of 44.7 mW at 1940 nm with a slope efficiency of 26% with respect to the launching power at1590 nm is achieved using a piece of 22 cm long germanate fiber.Laser output is also obtained with the excitation of a 793 nm laser diode. The passively Q-switched pulse output is demonstrated by using a carbon nanotube as the saturable absorber in the Tm3+ doped germanate glass for the first time. The germanate fiber laser generates ~1.5 μs pulses with a maximum pulse energy of 110 rJ, and the repetition rate varies from 15 to 84 kHz, depending on pump power.Result of this study can be used as potential potential application in sensing and monitoring with a further improvement in the performance of the fibers.
