HOW DOES PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE AND TECHNOLOGICAL CAPABILITY AFFECT R&D SOURCING MODE?

We explore how a firm’s product development experience and technological capability affect its R&D sourcing mode.We argue and find that breadth search, characterized by recombination knowledge development experience,is associated with greater use of external R&D mode.In contrast, depth search, characterized by specialized knowledge development experience,is associated with greater use of internal R&D mode. However, technological capability weakens a firm’s reliance on external R&D when the firm engages in breadth search. Our findings contribute to the growing literature on knowledge governance using the knowledge-based view of the firm.
