Information-Theoretic Approach and Philosophical Debates on Machine Discovery
Machine Discovery systems in artificial intelligence yielded results which somewhat tested and is still testing realists and anti-realists” positions in the debate of observable vs.theoretical statements.When the rigid border between data and hypotheses was broken down, MD system could rediscover more empirical laws.This paper attempts to interpret the old debate and the output of MD by applying Semantic Information Theory, the results of which are then used to clarify the differences between AIs (Artificial Intelligence system) and NIs (Natural Intelligence system).In addition, the author analyzes what available explanations Floridi”s ”Action-Based Semantics” makes of the ”intentionality” of discovery and discusses if the explanations advance our understanding of the nature of scientific discovery.
