The Information-Computation turn:a Hacking-type revolution
In this article I utilize Hacking”s Styles of Reasoning in order to describe the impact that ”Information” (in the sense of Information Theory has had on science in the 20th century both in theory and in application.A generalized, Information-laden scientific style of reasoning is introduced into the existing list of scientific Styles.Information-laden science will be examined by Hacking”s criteria for a new Style, and its associated ”revolution”.These criteria include a new scientific vocabulary as well as a wider social and conceptual context. The specific branch of science chosen to exhibit the new style is physics, which manifests a wide range of a style”s attributes: from the sociological aspects of practicing science and the Information-technology rich Information-age; to the theoretical advances of Black-Hole Thermodynamics (BHTD), and the advent of Quantum Information Theory (QIT).Similarly, in complementary investigates of cybernetics, systems or complexity theories, and computer simulations--Information-terminology is used as a natural vocabulary.
