China and the Mediterranean World: An International Collaborative Research Project (SERICA)
The lecture draws attention to a relatively new international and inter-academy project on textual, epigraphical and archaeological sources relating to China”s contacts with the Ancient Mediterranean World. The lecture will showcase a selection of its outcomes so far, viz.a series of monographs as well as a website containing on-line collections of texts and translations (both literary and epigraphical). It will also demonstrate how the compilation of a multilingual gazetteer on ”Places and Peoples of Central Asia” for the project has already helped to advance our ability to identify ”Western” toponymns (place-names) and ethnic terms in Chinese sources of the Han and Tang periods.
