Urbanization informer-Han China and in the early Roman empire
Specialists in the fields of Roman imperial history and Chinese imperial history argue that both the Roman and Han empires were characterized by a fairly high degree of urbanization. For one reason or another, however, the urban systems of these empires have never been examined from a comparative angle. One of the aims of this paper is to make a first step towards filling this lacuna by providing an admittedly impressionistic overall assessment of urban development and levels of urbanization in these two empires.Questions which will be addressed include the general shapes of urban hierarchies, approximate numbers of large and very large cities, estimated urbanization rates, and the economic underpinnings of Roman and Chinese urbanism in the early-imperial and western Han period. The second half of the paper will focus specifically on the capital cities of Rome and Chang”an.
