King A(s)oka ”s Philanthrōpia
King Ashoka”s inscriptions preaching the dhamma to his subjects are well known.Certain Greek influences could be assumed, foremost, perhaps, in the very fact of putting up these inscriptions at all.At a deeper level, parallels between early Buddhist thinking and Greek atomistic and Epicurean ideas have even tempted some scholars to construct much more precise connections between Indian and Greek philosophy. This paper surveys the (im)possibilities of Greco-Indian connections at this philosophical level and suggests that when it comes to a certain ideology of kingship Ashoka may plausibly have been inspired by Greek politico-philosophical ideas.
