Practical countermeasures are now necessary for reducing earthquake responses of existing high-rise buildings against prospective Nankai Trough earthquakes and long-period earthquakes.A newly developed response control unit comprises an inertial mass element and a viscous fluid damper,and is installed intensively into lower stories of a building,and functions as a large tuned mass damper.Compared with conventional retrofitting methods,the developed method can reduce the number of damping units substantially,and reduce both the maximum value and the duration of the earthquake response.The paper introduces the new method and its application to a 24-story building.
