Chemical composition and biosynthesis of propolis
Propolis is a bee product with a broad spectrum of biological and pharmacological properties. In the last decade, 244 compounds have been isolated from propolis for the first time. They belong to the chemical categories of flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, and their prenylated derivatives, terpenoids, stilbenes, and lignans, and coumarins.Other phytochemicals such as alkaloids, iridoids, and tannin have not been reported in propolis. The chemical characteristics of propolis from different plant sources and geographical origins indicate propolis is an enzymatic product from phytoehemicals.
