Botulinum toxin type-A injection to treat the patients with intractable anismus unresponsive to simple biofeedback training
Objectives This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of botulinum toxin type-A injection to the puborectalis and external sphincter muscle to treat patients with anismus unresponsive to simple biofeedback training.Patients and methods This retrospective study included 31 patients suffering from anismus and were unresponsive to simple biofeedback training.Diagnosis was made by anorectal manometry (ARM), balloon expulsion test, surface electromyography (sEMG) of the pelvic floor muscle, and defecography.Patients were performed BTX-A injection and pelvic floor biofeedback training.Follow-up was conducted before the paper.Improvment was evaluated using the chronic constipation scoring system. Results BTX-A injection combinding pelvic floor biofeedback training achieved success in 24 patients just after the treatment and 23 in them maintained a persisted satisfaction during a mean period of 8.4 month. Conclusion BTX-A injection combinding pelvic floor biofeedback training seems to be successful for intractable anismus.
