Development of Control System for Real-time Detection of Pesticide Residue in Apple Surface by Optical Technology
China ranks number one among the apple producing countries in the world. However, presence of pesticide in apple surface beyond the edible limit has raised serious health issues as well as has hampered the apple business in and abroad. This research has focused on development of semi-mechanized optical technology for rapid, real time and non-invasive detection of pesticide residue in apple surface.A semi-mechanized hardware system equipped with Raman spectroscopy system was fabricated and set up in laboratory.Hardware system was fabricated to clamp the sample at desired position to collect optical data in dark environment.LabView based software system was developed to control the system.Graphical Users Interface (GUI) based on LabView platform was developed to control the overall system including positioning of sample, acquiring optical data from sample surface, data smoothening and data analysis.Three different concentrations (4800 ppm,480 ppm and 48 ppm) of chlorpyrifos pesticide were applied around the equatorial surface of different samples.A laser light source of 785 nm was used to excite the electrons from the samples surface containing pesticide residues.Optical probe mounted in a Charged Couple Device (CCD) camera was used to collect the Raman spectrum. The results shows that the control system developed in the research can be used for detection of pesticide residue in apple surface. The research is a milestone for further development of effective and efficient software controlled hardware system for rapid and real time detection of pesticide residue in apple surface.
