An oscillating and non- oscillating subsoiler shanks and their influence on traction resistance and soil properties
An oscillatory ripper which was developed by China Agricultural University to break hardpan was used in this study, common in Maize (Zea maize) farms especially after harvest when heavy combine harvester move on the soil. The subsoiler was designed to be operated with a 44.1-58.8kW tractor. This experiment was carried out at Shan Xi province in China in November 2010.The two working style of deep ripper shank (oscillating and non- oscillating shank) were compared to find out their influence on draft requirements, and soil physical parameters such as,bulk density, and soil moisture content through the 300 mm soil layers from the soil surface. The nature of soil at the farm was found to be silt-clay soil. The results showed that,a reduction in traction resistance and bulk density were found for oscillating compared to non- oscillating subsoiler by 16.49% and 6.4% respectively. It was also found that shank working style significant effect on soil bulk density and machine draft (P < 0.05) while there is no significant difference on soil moisture content.
