　　Space charge and high field phenomena in dielectrics were the late Prof.Ziyu Liu”s key research themes.As one of his postgraduate students I benefited enormously from his guidance, broad knowledge and foresight in these areas.This paper concerns space charge and its role in electrical breakdown in polymeric materials which have been widely used for high voltage cable applications.It is dedicated to the late Prof.Ziyu Liu.
