Moatize coal-the uncommon petrographic quality and its consequences on the coke strength

  An ideal coal blend to produce coke must have an appropriate maceral composition ( vitrinite,exinite and inertite) and to be in a particular range of carbonization degree or rank.This is because these parameters are directly related to the structure and texture of coke which will influence its strength.A higher content of vitrinites implies a lower content of inerts into the maceral composition of the coals.A lower content of inerts in the coal affects positively both the cold and hot strength.The amount of vitrinite in the coals has a strong connection with the genesis and formation of deposits.The coals formed during the Carboniferous period in Europe and Eastern USA have high content of vitrinite.On the other hand the coals formed during the Permian period in Australian and Eastern Canada have low volumes of vitrinite that may be less than 50qo.The coals deposits located at Moatize in the Tete Province of Mozambique in Africa,though formed in the Permian period,have high volumes of vitrinite,above 800-/o.This work aims to show the technical aspects of the relationship between the vitrinite contents of the coals and the coke resistance.Besides it will be shown a comparative of results of coke resistance,from physical tests performed on a pilot scale in a renowned research center in China,between coals of different origins and therefore with different levels of vitrinites.The results revealed that the highest the vitrinite content of the coals the best was the strength indexes of the cokes.Moatize coals,with very high vitrinite content,achieved the best results in comparison to the other studied coals.
