Application of the blast furnace shaft CFD simulator

A state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics ( CFD) model and a user friendly software package named Blast Furnace Shaft Simulator ( BFSS) is applied to simulate the burden and gas distributions for minimizing fuel rate in blast furnaces ( BF).The BFSS software package has been used for the optimization of burden and gas distributions to maximize gas utilization with proper furnace permeability for given burden materials, productivities, and blast furnaces. It has also been used to provide a better understanding of furnace performance at different conditions. In addition,a Virtual Blast Furnace ( VBF) is developed by combining the virtual reality technologies with advanced CFD simulation.Visualizing of the high pressure, high temperature blast furnace operations is available.Using the BFSS and ” virtual blast furnace”,it is possible to design, optimize, and trouble shoot the blast furnace operation.
