Modeling of a thermo-electromagneto-hydrodynamic problem in continuous casting tundish with channel type induction heating
The induction heating is proposed to keep a constant casting temperature of the molten steel during the continuous casting process which is in favor of steel quality.A thermo-electromagneto-hydrodynamic model has been developed to understand the multi-physical field in a channel-type continuous casting tundish with induction heating. The mathematical model is coupled with the electromagnetic field, flow field and heat transfer. This article outlines the three-dimensional simulation of the joule heating and the electromagnetic force distribution which is important to the flow field and heat transfer of the molten steel in tundish. The finite element method was employed for the calculation of the electromagnetic model. The finite volume method was employed to study the fluid dynamic model. The results show that a current loop would be formed by the induced current through the channels. The joule heating and the electromagnetic force are generated because of the induced current. The temperature drop of the molten steel in tundish would be compensated by the joule heating effectively and the temperature distribution becomes more uniform. In addition, the molten steel flows upward after flows past the channel which would prolong the residence time of molten steel in the tundish.Due to the asymmetrical electromagnetic force in the channel, the molten steel has a rotating velocity when flows past the channel.
