Study of initial solidification during continuous casting

  The importance of initial solidification of molten steel in the mold has been widely acknowledged,as it is the origin of shell growth and determines both surface and internal quality of the final slab.However,most research regarding to initial solidification has been conducted in a way of mathematical simulation due to the high transient nature of thermodynamics and fluid flow in the upper mold.Through the recent developed mold simulator technology,the initial solidification behavior of Sn-Pb alloy was first successfully conduced in this paper,to allow the clear understanding of the inter-relationship between complex memscus heat transfer,casting surface oscillation marks and the in-mold temperature distribution.Heat flux across the mold was calculated by IHCP,and was then subjected to further PSD analysis.
