A finite element simulation and application to a roughing mill to improve slab camber
In the hot rolling process, certain asymmetrical rolling conditions may cause transversal thickness differences in the slab and deviations in the rolling direction from the center line, which are called wedge and camber, respectively.Wedge and camber problems may result in not only the emergence of cobbles in stands but also in yield loss and poor coil shape. In order to study the behavior of a slab during rolling,a finite element model of the roughing mill, including the entry side guides, the vertical stands, the intermediate side guides, the horizontal stand and delivery side guides, was established. The effects of the gap of side guides with the position mode and force mode were studied to investigate the mechanism of the lateral restricts of the side guides. Two asymmetric conditions,i.e.entry bar with wedge and slant roll gap, were simulated to evaluate the interaction between the camber and the wedge. The analysis results show that the longitudinal stress of slab cross section caused by the side guides not only changes the lateral material flow of the slab but also changes the velocity distribution of the slab.A formulation is proposed to represent the relation between the camber and the moments caused by the edger and side guides.
