Microstructural evolution and C diffusion analysis in laminated composite consisting of HCS and LCS

A laminated steel consisting of one layer high carbon steel( HCS) and one layer low carbon steel ( LCS) was prepared by centrifugal composite casting. In order to study the effects of bonding and thermomechanical treatment on microstructure and elements redistribution of the laminate, three cylindrical samples ( LS-A,LS-B and LS-C) were machined from the same billet.LS-A was kept as-cast state while LS-B and LS-C underwent different thermomechanical treatments, respectively. The microstructural evolution and C diffusion behavior were analysed by optical microscope( OM ),scanning electron microscope ( SEM ) and energy dispersive spectrometer ( EDS ).Vickers microhardness of the as-cast and hot deformed laminates was measured using a microhardness tester.Experimental results show that,in as-cast state, the formation of the interface between dissimilar steels has a significant influence on the microstructure of the laminate.C diffusion during the bonding process led to producing three sub-layered regions with different microstructural features in HCS layer, while this difference was weakened by hot compression.Microhardness variations were found across the interface and in HCS layer. The improvement of hardness of the laminate was achieved by microstructural refinement due to plastic deformation.
