Tin conservation in tinplate manufacture
Since the invention of tinplate, steady progress has been to improve its characteristics and reduce the amount of tin required in its manufacture. This has seen the development of hot-dip tinning, followed by electro-tinning with lower coating weights made possible by improved substrate cleanliness and more efficient electrolytes. With the recent historical highs in tin prices and increased global appetite for tin metal, the drive has been to further conserve tin and reduce its waste. This paper will focus on tin conservation made possible by a new class of electroplating modifiers,High Suppression Additives ( HSA) : sludge reduction ( HSA solution conditions affect the oxidation of tin and work in synergy with self-regenerating antioxidants),dragout reduction (lower tin- containing HSA electrolytes and improved rinse and recovery mechanisms) and give an example of one-year”s operational data from Line #5,Trostre Works,Llanelli,Wales.
