Design challenges for Arctic Pipelines

Large ground movements around pipelines caused by freeze-thaw cycles in Northern climates can lead to stresses that exceed the yield strength of line pipe. The strain-based design approach used by pipeline engineers to account for this severe operating environment requires detailed information on the capacity of the line pipe to tolerate these deformations without rupturing or buckling.Large-scale biaxial tension and bending tests are used to generate the required information for this design approach. This paper discusses the strain-based design approach and reviews the large-scale tests required to characterize the strain capacity of line pipe.
