The effect of water vapor on oxide scale of ferritic stainless steels at high temperature

Steel grade B445JIM was found to have more sticking possibility in hot rolling than that of grade SUS430.Oxide scale is a key factor affecting the sticking behaviour. In order to study the effect of water vapour on oxidation behaviour of ferritic stainless steels, the experiments on oxidation of ferritic stainless steels B445JIM and SUS430 under high temperature at 1 100℃ for 2 h were carried out with different water vapour contents in an electrical resistance furnace. The oxide scale thicknesses and the compositions of the two ferritic stainless steels were compared and analyzed by using SEM,OM,EDX and XRD.Breakaway oxidation was observed for SUS430 but not for B445JIM during the experiment.
