Microstructural characteristics of dynamic ferrite transformation
Dynamic ferrite transformation during uniaxial compression was simulated in a Fe - 6Ni - 0.1 C alloy. The degree of dynamic softening on stress-strain curves and the fraction of dynamically transformed ferrite were increased with decreasing deformation temperature at a constant strain rate.Microstructural observation revealed that Widmanst(a)tten-Iike ferrite grains formed during deformation of austenite. These grains initiated at favorable nucleation sites, such as austenite grain boundaries or twin boundaries, and grew into austenite grains during subsequent deformation.EBSD measurement revealed that few numbers of the selected Widmanstatten-like ferrite variants were strongly developed in an identical austenite grain, and Widmanst(a)tten-like ferrite grains satisfied KurdjumovSachs ( KS ) orientation relationship with austenite grain during their growth.Subsequent deformation resulted in the increase of misorientation in an identical Widmanstatten-Iike ferrite grain, leading not to preserve KS orientation relationship any longer.
