Flexible process solutions for integrated steelmaking

The mayor global trends steel makers are facing at the moment are the demand for higher quality steel grades, the decreasing quality of ores and coals available on the market and the volatile markets and prices on the raw material as well as on the final product side. Finally the recent trend of decreasing gas prices is giving boost to direct reduced iron and questions how steel production can benefit from this trend.Siemens VAI is supporting steel makers to cope with these trends by offering solutions that increase flexibility in an integrated plant. In a first step the portfolio for solutions for hot metal treatment was completed. Now competitive solutions for sulfur removal with injection or KR technology can be offered as well as solution to remove phosphorus from the hot metal using ladle or converter. These solutions allow processing a wide range of raw material qualities.Solutions for converter steelmaking with flexible scrap or DRI rates up to 50% and more are discussed.A modular approach is chosen, giving possibility for further upgrades,if desired scrap or DRI rate is increased further. For moderate scrap or DRI rates KOBM and KMS technology is applied, for highest scrap rate additional energy is brought to the steel bath with increased post combustion and enhanced heat transfer from the off gas to the melt.Due to the modular concept it is of course easy possible to return to standard BOF operation with minimal or no scrap or DRI charging at all.In the presentation detailed comparison of costs and productivity for different scrap rates and different process technologies like KOBM or KMS will be shown.
