Heat recovery in combined steel plants:technology and possibilities for the EAF and the walking beam furnace

Energy efficiency is the order of the day for energy intense industries like steel plants, and waste heat recovery is a quite big part of every efficiency concept.Technology is available and means steam generation in the first place, still there are different aspects to look at that decide about cost and efficiency of a heat recovery system. The losses in waste gas and cooling water are between 20 - 300-/o of the primary energy input for the big steel plant furnaces. The crucial point is the steam usage;while process steam is economically the best way only a few plants have enough process steam demand to consume all energy.Selling steam is an alternative,in many cases it ” s partly or completely about power generation. The article gives an overview about parallels and differences in heat recovery technology for the different furnace types, spotlights steam usage aspects and finally comes to the different approaches of waste heat power generation.
