Using Lateral Offset Splicing to Fabrication Optical Fiber Interferometer Sensors with Light in Sensing Arm Exposed to the Analyte
In this paper we proposed two types of optical fiber interferometer sensors with light beam in sensing arm is exposed to the outside environment; these sensors are fabricated by splicing sections of single-mode fibers (SMFs) with large lateral offset. As the light beam in the sensing arm of the interferometer sensors are exposed and can easily interaction with the analyte, these sensors have a high sensitivity and is suit for chemical or biology material detection.Operation principle and fabrication details of these sensors are analyzed under the aid of the beam propagation method (BPM) simulation. And several such sensors including the large lateral offset based optical fiber Fabry-Pérot(FP) type and Mach-Zehnder(MZ) type interferometer were fabricated and experimentally evaluated trough detection the pressure variation induced air refractive index changes. The experiment results show that these sensors have a high refractive index sensitivity and linearity refractive index response. And the Fabry-Pérot type interferometer also has very low thermal sensitivity.
