Articulatory-Acoustic Relations in the Palatal Vowels of Cantonese

The study evaluates the quantal theory (Stevens ”6,7”) by analyzing the articulatory-acoustic relations in the four Cantonese palatal vowels, the long ”i?” and ”y?” and the medium-long ”i” and ”y”,through investigating the sensitivity of vowel formant frequencies to variations of linguo-palatal constriction location and constriction size along the vocal tract length during the vowels, using EMMA AG500.The acoustic-articulatory data obtained in this study suggest the quantal nature of the palatal vowels in Cantonese. The acoustic consequences of up-down and front-back displacements in linguo-palatal constriction are non-linear.Moderate displacements in constriction location and constriction size result in large spectral changes.Vowel spectra are more sensitive to variation in constriction size than constriction location. The results which are similar to the findings reported in Beckman,et al ”1”,Perkell and Cohen ”3”,and Perkell and Nelson ”4,5” bear on the quantal theory.
