SOLVENT EXTRACTION OF MOLYBDENUM AND VANADIUM WITH HBL(R) 101:SPECIATION AND MECHNISM

The molar ratio of reaction between molybdenum and the anti isomer of HBL(@)101 oxime (H2ox) in the extraction can be inferred to 1∶2 using the saturation extraction method, suggesting that the Mo-HBL(@) 101 oxime complex is MoO2 (Hox)2.Similarly, the molar ratio between vanadium and the HBL(@) 101 oxime was determined to be 1∶1,suggesting that the V-HBL(@)101 oxime complex is VO2(Hox).The 1H NMR spectrum of the Mo-HBL(@)101complex suggested that the predominant molybdenum species, MoO22+, coordinated the extractant through the hydroxyl proton and a lone pair of electrons of the nitrogen of the HBL(@)101 oxime to form Mo-HBL(@)101 complexes, indicating a chelating mechanism for the extraction reaction. The structure of the Mo-HBL(@)101 complex species and the mechanism were confirmed by the infrared spectrum. The 1H NMR spectrum of the VHBL(@)101 complex suggested that the predominant vanadium species, VO2+ , could coordinate the extractant through either (1) the hydroxyl proton alone;or (2) the hydroxyl proton and a lone pair of electrons of the nitrogen of the HBL(@)101 oxime. The infrared spectra showed that the complexation is most likely via the cation exchange of the hydroxyl proton.
