National Essential Medicare Formulary,Basic Medical Insurance and Elderly Health
Based on Grossman health need model, this paper analyzes the function and effect of basic urban medical insurance on elderly health through establishing a model to determine health needs, using data from the survey of determinants of elderly health and illness in China(2005) and employing OPROBIT model, and explanations from aging psychology and physiological are given.The main conclusion obtained in this paper is that basic medical insurance can”t significantly improve self-assessment of health, physiological functions and cognitive functions of the elderly.The possible explanations may be that the special state of mind of the elderly is very likely to overlook early signs of disease; some antipsychotic drugs in National Essential Medicare Formulary have significant side effects; drugs in category B of National Essential Medicare Formulary affect medication of elderly patients in different areas,eventually leading to health disparities.
