Female Drosophila Germ Line Stem Cell Niches

Drosophila female germ line stem cells (GSCs) are sustained by the specific microenvironments called niches and the regulation of signaling pathways.Niches are considered to be composed of tissue cells and extracellular substrates that can indefinitely house one or more stem cells, controlling their self-renewal and preventing differentiation.During decades, studies Drosophila germ line stern cells niche system used as models have revealed that support cells and their signaling pathways in the microenvironment play a significant role in controlling the fate of the stem cells.Furthermore, the number and functions of stem cells and their niches undergo an age-related decline which is controlled extrinsically and intrinsically in Drosophila ovary.
