Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Treatment
The incidence of diabetes is increasing worldwide year by year.Mesenchymal stem cell(MSC) transplantation is an effective therapeutic method for type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).The MSCs including bone marrow MSCs,umbilical cord MSCs,placenta-derived MSCs,etc can differentiate into insulin producing cells in vivo and ex vivo. There are three possible mechanisms of MSCs for T1DM treatment.Firstly, the transplanted MSCs can overcome the functional defects of Tregs and protect pancreatic islet β cells from destruction of auto-antibodies.Secondly,the transplanted MSCs can stimulate the regeneration and insulin secretion of host islet β cells.Thirdly, the transplanted MSCs can be induced by host microenvironment to differentiate into functional insulin-producing cells in vivo. The transplantation of MSCs is a promising for T1DM treatment, although there were still many aspects for clinical practice that need to be further studied.
