Field Evaluation of Nitrogen Responses of Bt Transgenic Rice in Two Insects-Control Conditions
Studies showed rice plants suffered relatively more pressure from pests in higher nitrogen fertilizer levels, and Bt-endotoxin proteins varied in different plant parts with the age of the plant causing variation in efficacy of Bt crops against target pests. Therefore,it is meaningful to study how is the efficacy of Bt transgenic rice against lepidopteran pests in response to N fertilizer application. Our studies aimed to determine the yield differences of Bt transgenic rice genotypes over non transgenic genotypes in insects control treatments, and examine the genotypic variation in agronomic and morphological traits under different nitrogen treatments. It proves that hybrid rice genotypes suffered more yields loss, and had significantly less yields than Bt genotypes, due to the more serious damage caused by insects invasion. It is found that rice plants suffered relatively more pressure from pests in higher nitrogen fertilizer levels, and the Bt genotypes suffered less yields loss (13.7%) than hybrid genotypes (52.1%) in zero insects-control treatments. Our results also indicate that the yield components data indicated that larger effective panicles number of Bt genotypes contributed higher final yields; Bt-endotoxin concentration correlated significantly with the N level. Therefore,it is meaningful to take advantage of Bt rice with the combination of higher yield, insects resistance and N use efficiency.
