Stent Implantation for Congenital Heart Disease
Stents have been introduced for clinical use in late 1980”s.It was Chuck Mullins who reported on their first use.Currently,we use stents to treat:branch pulmonary artery stenosis; coarctation of the aorta; venous obstruction (patients with Mustard baffle obstruction) ;stenting the atrial septum in patients with restrictive atrial communication; pulmonary venous obstruction and other miscellaneous conditions.Stents can be divided into three types based on their design:Closed cell design; open cell design and the hybrid design.Further stents can be bare or covered. For stent delivery,it is extremely important to have a delivery sheath. The delivery sheath is used to protect the stent and prevent entanglement of the stent with cardiac structures and also the sheath can be used to perform angiography during stent deployment and positioning. This can be done via the side arm of the sheath.
