Can Education for Sustainable Development further the goals of Social and Environmental Policies?
2005-2014 was declared the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UN DESD) to be led by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).UNESCO have had a long history of involvement in matters relating to Sustainable Development.including developing the Man and the Biosphere Programme in 1977 and participating in the key UN 1972, 1992 and 2002 conferences.UNESCO state that: ”The overall goal of the DESD is to integrate the values inherent in sustainable development into all aspects of learning to encourage changes in behaviour that allow for a more sustainable and just society for all” (UNESCO,2005)This paper considers recent theoretical debates surrounding the links between environment, education and sustainable development.The paper draws on research evidence to question whether education for sustainable development can further the goals of social and environmental policies.
