A Case Study of UF Ceramic Membrane as Pretreatment of SWRO
Pretreatment of feed-in water is essential for SWRO seawater desalination process. Most of membrane pretreatment prior to SWRO used organic membranes and few researches were focused on the inorganic membranes. In this pilot experiment,a UF ceramic membrane with a skin layer γ-Al2O3 was applied as a pretreatment upstream of SWRO in Jiaozhou Bay,the Bohai Sea.The effects of operating conditions including cross-flow velocity, transmembrane pressure (TMP),feed temperature and pH on the performance of the UF ceramic membrane were investigated.Several parameters such as turbidity,TDS and COD of the feed water as well as the permeate solution were measured. The results showed that operating conditions played a major role in the filtration flux and the UF ceramic membrane system was sueceasful in achieving stable permeability and consistent filtrate quality.
