Antibacterial activity in plants from traditional Chinese medicine
Sixty traditional Chinese medical plants were selected according to the TCM theory and clinical use. After extracted by four environmentally friendly solvents (water,ethanol,acetone,n-hexane) separately, antibacterial activity of all the 240 extracts was tested by using disk diffusion assay.Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test was performed on the extracts which show positive results, liquid culture bioassay according to the NCCLS guidelines was employed.Ten strains, including Staphylococcus aureus ssp.aureus,Entercoccus faecalis,Bacillus cereus,Klebsiella pneumoniae,Salmonella enteritidis,Shigella flexneri,Enterobacter aerogenes,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Bacillus subtilis and Acinetobacter baumannii, were selected to test standard antibacterial activity. Some plants showed quite strong antibacterial activity, such as Mudanpi (Paeonia suffruticosa Andr.),of which ethanol and acetone extract could significantly inhibit the growth of Acinetobacter baumannii,Entercoccus faecalis,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis. In addition, all the four extracts of Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza),the acetone extract of Shechuangzi (Cnidium monnieri Cuss.) and Liaolan (Polygonum tinctorium),inhibited Bacillus subtilis growth at MIC 416.7 μg/mL.The majority of plants, whose clinical use for antibacterial treatment are well supported within TCM,show in vitro antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis. These preliminary research results provide more scientific evidence supporting the clinical application of these plants, and can serve as a starting point for new drug discovery from TCM.
