Effects of smoke-water on photosynthetic characteristics of Isatis indigotica seedlings
Although it is well documented that smoke water promotes medicinal plants growth, there are few published studies on the mechanism of smoke water improving the plants growth. This study highlights the effects of smoke wateron photosynthetic gas-exchange characteristics and chlorophyll fluorescence on Isatis indigotica,a Chinese medicinal plant. Results showed that net photosynthetic rate (Pn) in leaves was increased by smoke water, which reached a maximum on days 15,5 and 15 after the treatment with smoke water at dilutions of 1∶500,1 ∶ 1000 and 1∶2000 respectively.Transpiration rate (Tr) and stomatal conductance (Gs) both showed similar trends to Pn.However intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) showed a decreasing trend after the treatment of smoke water. The Fv/Fm ranged from 0.78 to 0.86 and did not show any significant differences with the treatment of smoke water. The ΦPSⅡ was markedly promoted with the application of smoke water (1∶1000) compared with control and smoke water at dilutions of 1∶500 and 1∶2000.The coefficient of photochemical quenching (qP) showed a similar trend to that observed with the ΦPSⅡ.The coefficient of non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll (NPQ) was decreased with treatment of smoke water. These findings suggest the increase in photosynthesis induced by smoke water may be attributed to the enhanced stomatal conductance of the leaves and the increased level of the photochemical efficiency of PSⅡ.
