The spatio-temporal changes of coastal vegetation using two different management practices in Yancheng National Nature Reserve, China
This paper presents a landscape analysis of vegetation changes in the core zone of Yancheng National Nature Reserve (YNNR) using remote sensing and geographical information systems (GIS) technology from 1993 to 2010.The core zone of YNNR was divided into an ecological engineering zone and a natural succession zone. The results revealed that the area of YNNR increased by 226.84km2between 1993 and 2010.The increase in the number of square kilometers in the ecological engineering zone was fewer than that in the natural succession zone. The rate of sedimentation along the coast increased faster between 1993 and 2002 than between 2002 and 2010.Vegetation components in the ecological engineering zone and the natural succession zone were significantly different.Reed was consistently the main vegetation cover type in the ecological engineering zone;dominant species of Suaeda were gradually replaced by reeds and Spartina in the natural succession zone. The change in vegetation in different administrative zones showed dissimilar characteristics.Spartina cover increased in the natural succession zone but significantly decreased in the ecological engineering zone.Cogongrass land and Suaeda land showed rapid loss in both zones.Changes in the centroid lines of different vegetation moved east regularly in the natural succession zone, but moved in disorder in the ecological engineering zone. The results of this study provide basic information that will inform subsequent research and will support decision-making for the sustainable management and conservation of the YNNR.
