Modeling Substrate Diffusion in ANAMMOX Granule and Its Microbiological Implications
A mathematical model was developed to describe the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX)process in Anaerobic Rotating Biological Contactor (An-RBC) reactor.ANAMMOX granules were cultivated in the An-RBC reactor by seeding simulated wastewater. The granule based reactor had a great N-loading resistant capacity. In all test period the removal of ammonia and nitrite overt 95%,the reactor had demonstrated excellent potential for N-removal.According to microelectrode test, the model simulation results on substrate diffusion in granule matched the experimental data well. The substrate micro-profiles showed that the ANAMMOX bacteria main aggregation in 700-9001m of granule.NH4+ and NO2ˉ has different penetrate ability as different diffusioncoefficient. In the core of granule, plenty of NO3-accumulation due to short of electron donor.
