Understanding of PVDF Ultrafiltration Membrane Fouling Behavior by Model Solutions and Secondary Wastewater Effluent

  The fouling behavior of Polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes by model solutions and secondary wastewater effluent had been investigated.Bovine serum albumin (BSA),sodium alginate (SA) and humic acid (HA) were used as model foulants and the organic matter in secondary wastewater effluent (EfOM) was used as actual foulants.PVDF UF membranes used in this study were prepared via non solvent induced phase separation method.All membrane fouling experiments were carried out in dead-end filtration mode.The morphology of clean and fouled membranes were measured by Atomic force microscopy (AFM).Results showed that the fouling behavior of membranes fouled by BSA,SA,HA and EfOM were different.In the initial stages of filtrations,the BSA fouled membrane showed the most sharply flux decline.In the later stages of filtrations,however more significant flux decline was observed in SA fouled membrane.The HA and EfOM fouled membranes showed a gradual permeate flux decline and the flux decline rate of HA fouled membrane was the lowest over all filtration time.However,it is obviously that the permeate flux decline rate of all fouled membranes reached 50% in a short filtration time.This indicates that the effect of foulant type on membrane-foulants interactions is conspicuous and the flux decline rate and extent of membrane fouling mainly depend on the membrane-foulant interaction.Combined with the AFM analysis,it was found that there were significant differences in the gel layer structures of BSA,SA,HA and EfOM,which was closely related to the membrane fouling behavior.The gel chromatography analysis as well as DOC removal rate confirmed that UF membranes have barely any removal efficiency for small molecular substances in feed solution.
