Metabolomics to Enhance Ethnobotanical Studies in China
China and North America share many sister plant lineages, but the chemical variation among closely related species has not been fully explored. These sister lineages may be beneficial in ethnobiology as sources of untapped phytochemicals. However, they can also be used as economic adulterants. Therefore, the thorough understanding chemical variation in a given plant species,or among closely related species, can be critical in ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological studies.Metabolomics is an important analytical tool to facilitate study qualitatively and quantitatively these differences.Plants used by minority groups within China offer a great opportunity to look at how genetic and environmental differences can influence chemical variation in plants.
