DUST EXPLOSION PROTECTION:CURRENT METHODS AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS AT FM GLOBAL
Dust explosions can produce very large pressure rises inside enclosed spaces,which can be potentially damaging with severe consequences such as large property loss,extended business interruption,loss of life,and serious injury.For this reason,extensive research on explosion hazards and protection has been conducted over the years at FM Global with ongoing efforts that continue to address new issues and protection needs.Despite the numerous protection methods that can be used against dust explosions (such as explosion venting,suppression,and isolation),the present paper is focused solely on venting-based methods.Previous work at FM Global on the development of a vent-sizing guideline that is currently being used to provide protection recommendations will be reviewed; current research on the new development of a methodology to evaluate flameless venting devices will also be discussed.
