Pregnancy outcome after intracytoplasmic sperm injection with strontium oocyte activation in globozoospermic patients

Objective:To evaluate the effectiveness of the strontium oocyte activation combined with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) using globozoospermic sperm Material and method:Two couples with males suffering from total globozoospermia were involved in the present study. In the first case, after the first ICSI attempts failed with low fertilization rate (20%) and cleavage number below 4 cells in day 3 after ICSI,split ICSI was used in the second cycle. The oocytes were randomly grouped, with 5 for ICSI alone, and the other 10 for ICSI with strontium oocytes activation, and the fertilization rates in both group were 20%.In the strontium activation group, the cleavage number in day 3 reached 8 cells and 5 cells respectively. In the second case, neither of the oocytes by ICSI or ICSI combined with strontium activation was fertilized. Results:Twin pregnancy and healthy live-births with one-year follow-up were achieved from the strontium activation group. Conclusion:It was concluded that oocytes activation by strontium with the globozoospermic sperm may not be effective to increase fertilization rate, even though it seems to improve the quality of oocytes. The cause and mechanism of no or low fertility of globozoospermic patients are needed to be further investigated.Though twin healthy live births were obtained with 12-months” follow-up after birth, further studies on the long-term health of the babies are required to ensure the safety of this method.
