Lycopene supplment and reduced blood pressure:a meta-analysis of intervention trials
Objective:Epidemiological studies had suggested that lycopene intake could lower blood pressure,but the results were conflicting.Our present study aimed to establish the effect of lycopene supplement on blood pressure by conducting a meta-analysis of intervention trials.Methods:PubMed database was screened to search for intervention studies evaluating the effect of lycopene on blood pressure with a minimum duration of 2 weeks through February 2012.Meta-analysis was conducted by using random effectmodel to to calculate the combined effect size.Additionally,subgroup analysis stratified by baseline blood pressure,lycopene dosage and duration were also conducted.Results:Five studies met inclusion criteria,and the pooled analysis demonstrated a significant reduction of blood pressure(mean SBP =-4.815 ”-8.618,-1.012”,p =0.009,mean DBP =-2.249 ”-4.218,-0.279”,p =0.025).Obvious heterogeneity was observed(P=0.000,I2 =64.3 %).Results of subgroup analysis displayed that lycopene significantly lowered blood pressureamong participants with baseline SBP>120mmHg,DBP>80mmHg (meanSBP =-5.638 ”-9.504,-1.772”,mean DBP =-2.350 ”-4.404,-0.295”),furthermore,thehigher dosage of lycopene,with the longer intervention period could lower blood pressure more significantly.Conclusions:Our meta-analysis provided certain evidence that lycopene supplement could significantly reduce blood pressure,especially for those hypertensive subjects,meanwhile,the higher dosage of lycopeneand the longer intervention period showed more effective effect on the reduction of blood pressure,especially for Asians.Further researches are required to confirm our results and explore the antihypertensive effect of lycopene with higher dosage and longer periods among larger and more diverse populations.
