Cholic acid treatment in LDLR knockout mice induces hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis in an FXR-independent mechanism
Bile acids play important roles in the metabolism of cholesterol and other fat-soluble nutrients by enhancing solubility and activating farnesoid X receptor (FXR).Moreover,excessive amounts of bile acids in the liver and circulation can cause hepatic and endothelial inflammation.To investigate the role of bile acids and FXR in atherosclerosis,LDLR-/-mice were fed a chow diet supplemented with cholic acid (CA) or lithocholic acid (LCA),for 12 weeks.
