Changing Trends in Shigella Species and Serotype Distribution in a Beijing Referral Hospital from 1994 to 2010
Shigella species are a common cause of acute diarrheal disease in China.Knowing the distribution of Shigella species and serotypes is important for the prevention and correct treatment of this disease.A total of 5999 Shigella strains were isolated and serotyped from the 302nd Hospital in Beijing,China from 1994-2010.The number of Shigella isolates reached a peak of 19.84% (n=1192) in 1996,but has been decreasing annually reaching 0.41% (n=24) in 2010.The total isolation rates of S.flexneri,S.sonnei,S.dysenteriae and S.boydii accounted for 71.7%(n=4295),27.3% (n=1639),0.55% (n=33) and 0.33% (n=20) respectively, but S.boydii and S.dysenteriae increased from 2006.In the year 2000 S.sonnei surpassed S.flexneri as the predominant serotype and became the dominant subgroup from 2006.S.flexneri 2a and S.sonnei were the most frequently isolated Shigella with 53% (n=3153) and 27% (n=1639) respectively, followed by S.flexneri 4c,4a,and S.flexneri x,all around 3% (n=180).
