IHWSN:Intelligent Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks for Bridge Monitoring
Structural health monitoring (SHM) for bridges is a way of monitoring the status of a bridge to detect damage. Most of SHM systems proposed are based on WSN using acceleration measurements. But some important parts of a bridge, especially the top of bridge pier, might be slightly damaged due to the long-term corrosion by the rain and compression by traffic load, this slight structure damage is critical and can be better detected by camera.Using cameras to detect this structure damage is not concerned by previous works. This paper proposes a system called IHWSN especially for detecting both vibration and structure damage. In the system, two kinds of nodes are adopted. One is the ordinary sensor node, and the other is the camera node.We design the network architecture of this system and propose an event-trigger mechanism to save the power of the sensor nodes due to that the events causing vibration are random.Besides these,a two-level storage mechanism is also designed for our heterogeneous network. Finally the implementation of this system in a laboratory setting is described.
